The Sarakup Indu Dayak Sarawak (SIDS) expresses its deep concern regarding the recent statistics released by the One Stop Teenage Pregnancy Committee (OSTPC). It is particularly concerning to note that 51 per cent of recorded cases involve the Iban community, and that 95 per cent of pregnant teenagers are currently not in the school system.
Our Core Philosophy: Education as a Shield
At SIDS, we believe that education is the most effective deterrent against the challenges of early pregnancy. We echo the sentiment that a higher level of education leads to a brighter future and prevents our girls from being trapped in cycles of vulnerability.
One of the strategic plans this year is in the promotion of education under our Barbara Mendu Bay Education Fund (BMBEF) in reaching out to rural students in providing them as well as their parents with motivation and share information on education opportunities.
SIDS remains dedicated to working with the State Government, the Health Department, and other agencies to ensure our young women are empowered by knowledge rather than limited by circumstance.
